Medical Cards Must be Carried by Drivers for the Next Year

Jan 10, 2014

According to Fleet Owner:

"Several states have notified the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that they are not ready to integrate information regarding the medical examiner’s certificate into the Commercial Driver’s License System (CDLIS), so the agency will require drivers to carry paper copies of their medical cards for another year.

FMCSA plans to file a document in the next couple of days for publication in the Federal Register extending that requirement until Jan. 30, 2015.

This will be the second extension of the requirement that drivers carry paper medical cards. Under December 2008 rule, states were to have combined drivers’ self-certification of medical status with CDLIS records by Jan. 30, 2012. But in a November 2011 rule, FMCSA gave state driver licensing agencies until Jan. 30, 2014, to complete the transition because some of the state agencies said they would not be ready."
